Woman with cancer given the gift of A/C during extreme heat

GARDNER, KS (KCTV) - You don't need a bank sign to tell you how hot it's been recently. Some people need more relief than others and a local company is offering that relief, free of charge.

Ashley Bilbrey likes to enjoy a moment of bliss, when she can, amidst a very tough year. At just 31 years old, Bilbrey is fighting stage four breast cancer. Her diagnosis changed her September wedding plans. Rather than an extravagant wedding, she and her sweetheart married on their couch after Bilbrey battled a tough round of chemo. They plan to walk down the aisle, party style, in the spring.

GARDNER, KS (KCTV) - An area business steps in again after a cancer patient's air-conditioning unit fails a second time.

Ashley Bilbrey came home from a cancer hospital in Houston last month to discover her air conditioning had failed. LBA Heating and Cooling made the expensive repairs then at no cost to Bilbrey.

Except the unit stopped working a second time over the weekend, sending temperatures inside Bilbrey's home soaring to 90 degrees. Neither Ashley nor her husband, Sean, knew what to do.

Ductless Mini Splits Provide Comfort And Make Installation Easy

Sometimes, a standard central air conditioning system just isn’t the answer. Bulky air ducts cannot always reach every part of a house, either because of tight spaces or because a room addition is located too far from the central A/C unit. Luckily, there is another option. Ductless mini-splits provide an alternative that is not only easier to install, but can also be more efficient and more comfortable than a traditional system.

Ductless mini-splits differ from a central air conditioning system in two main ways. First, instead of having one large, central air cooling unit inside the house, a mini-split system uses multiple smaller units — “mini” units, which are each “split” off the same system. Second, mini-splits are “ductless,” because each room has its own separate cooling unit. There is no need for a duct system to carry the air from a central location to the individual rooms.

This gives ductless mini-split systems several advantages. They can be easily installed almost anywhere, thanks to their small size and lack of ducts. With a separate cooling unit for each room, ductless mini-splits allow you to also have a separate thermostat in each room, giving you maximum control over comfort. No longer will you have to contend with some rooms that are too warm at the same time that other rooms are too cold. The separate thermostats can also help you cut down on your electric bills, since you can turn down the air conditioning in rooms that are not currently being used. Plus, the lack of ducts helps to make mini-splits more efficient; air ducts tend to leak, and the air that finally reaches the rooms is usually not quite as cold after a trip through a long duct.

That doesn’t mean that ductless mini-splits are the right choice for everyone; each home and each situation is different. But a mini-split system might be the ideal solution for your cooling needs. Air Filter Changes: Here’s What You Need To Know

We once had a customer in Kansas City whose furnace stopped working for seemingly no reason. With one visit from one of our technicians, the problem was easily solved with a new air filter. This case was extreme because the person was renting the house and hadn’t changed the air filter the entire time they had been living there.

Most people change their air filters now and then, but aren’t really sure how often they should be doing it. If you don’t change your air filters frequently enough, chances are your equipment will still function, but it is very likely going to lose efficiency, which will cost you money in the long run.

The first thing you need to know about changing your air filters is where they are actually located. This was one of the problems in the rental situation; the tenant didn’t even know where to look! If you are in a new house or have recently had new equipment installed, ask us where to find the air filters and how to change them. Don’t forget, there may be more than one, depending on your heating and air conditioning system, and they are not always in an obvious place.

Aside from lost efficiency, failure to regularly change air filters can result in dirtier air, which can be particularly problematic if you or members of your family have allergies or are sensitive to dust. Dirt and dust can also build up if old filters are left in too long, which can eventually cause larger problems including total system failure.

So how often should you change your filters? Well, it depends on the time of year, your home, and the equipment you have. You should at least check the filters once a month. When the heating system isn’t working as much, the filters will need to be changed less frequently, but it should be done at least once every three months. In winter, you may need to change them once a month, especially in older homes that may have more dust buildup in the system.
